Addendum to BAAPS statement on BBL [THE BAAPS CALLS FOR URGENT REGULATION OF BBL PROCEDURES issued 23 October 2024]
03 December 2025 (Last updated: 3 Dec 2025 05:01)
The BAAPS campaigned for many years for increased safety in buttock augmentation procedures (the BBL or “Brazilian Butt Lift”) whether performed with fat transfer or synthetic fillers, because of specific risks resulting from the anatomical complexity of the buttocks. We published guidance on performing the procedure safely in 2021 and campaigned again in 2024 for the introduction of regulations regarding the qualifications of specialist surgeons involved.
We are now witnessing the start of a change in aesthetic fashion of this part of the body, away from the exaggerated aesthetic of recent years, and toward a more subtle enhancement. Slowly but surely more patients are requesting a reduction of their surgically enlarged buttocks. This may seem a minor procedure, but the BAAPS wishes to emphasize that the anatomical complexity of the buttock remains, with the same risks of sepsis, severe bleeding and fat embolus, and even death with liposuction as with fat transfer or filler injection. It is therefore imperative that the surgical correction be carried out by suitably trained plastic surgeons, under ultrasound guidance, in CQC regulated premises.
