About me:
Having trained in several of the worlds best centres, and operating on several continents, I am driven to pushing the specialty of plastic surgery forwards. My aim is to improve treatment options for patients and mentor the next generation of cosmetic surgeons. By critically analysing current approaches to aesthetic surgery and working alongside BAAPS council and the incoming president, I am passionate about making the UK the safest place in the World to have cosmetic surgery, and provide world Class Results to patients.
I have taken leadership roles in all of the domains within which I am active; clinical provision, research & teaching and I currently have a busy cosmetic practice focusing on body contouring (Tummy tucks and liposuction) and all types of cosmetic breast surgery. I have extensive experience and documented results in 'combined' procedures also termed 'mummy makeover' (often incorrectly). These results can be seen on my instagram profile (cosmetic_surgery_wales)
My main drives are to optimise every single part of the pre, intra and post operative process to optimise both results and patient safety - alongside developing an extensive research portfolio to improve patient educations using novel technologies, advanced use of imagining and patient reported outcome measures.
Along side my focused cosmetic practice, I am the founding director (2012-) of a Plastic Surgery Research Centre (www.reconregen.co.uk) which is now one of the largest in Europe. The recent Royal opening of the £2.5m research programme saw widespread international coverage.
I have served as the academic lead for the Plastic Surgery SAC (2018-21) and was the deputy editor of the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (JPRAS). I am currently the Surgical Specialty Lead for Health & Care Research Wales. I was selected as the first UK based AAPS / EURAPS Academic Scholar to form a trans-atlantic collaboration with Harvard Medical School to move 3D bioprinted tissue towards clinical translation. I recently represented the specialty of Plastic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons Commission for the Future of Surgery, to help define which areas will have the biggest impact on the future.
I have published over 300 papers (H index 45, i10 index 125 and 5 books) with a grant income >£6m which shows my commitment to thought leadership within the specialty of plastic surgery. I was particularly honoured to talk about the ‘Future of Plastic Surgery’ at BAPRAS 75. My team presents work annually on the research I am leading including 3D Bioprinting and cutting-edge technologies (e.g. health informatics, natural language processing (NLP), PROMs) to transform the delivery of safe and effective surgery.
I enjoy training future plastic surgeons, highlighted by my ‘Golden Scalpel Award’ (2018) from PLASTA for the best UK consultant trainer, in recognition of my commitment to mentor future surgeons. I have edited 5 educational textbooks with international co-authors which provide core knowledge to aspiring plastic surgeons. I am committed to maintaining strong links between the UK and our European neighbours by leading a EURAPS Young Plastic Surgeons Scholarship Centre.
During the pandemic, I showed the value and transferable skills of plastic surgeons, leading my team to publish world leading articles on the need for surgeons to wear personal protective equipment, to protect patients, their families and themselves) and many topics including including service redesign, surgical safety, resource requirements and novel training methods.
