Simon Withey assumes leadership role at the BAAPS

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (www.baaps.org.uk), the not-for-profit organisation established for the advancement of education and practice of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for public benefit, today announced the appointment of London-based consultant plastic surgeon Simon Withey to the role of President.
According to Michael Cadier, consultant plastic surgeon and outgoing President:
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Withey as the new President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. As a long-standing Council member Simon has been instrumental in promoting the BAAPS’ message of patient safety and education, and his roles in the Keogh Review and the Royal College of Surgeons’ committee on surgical interventions have helped to raise awareness for change in the Aesthetic sector.”
Simon Withey graduated from his medical studies in London in 1984 and continued his surgical training at a number of London teaching hospitals, becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1989 and England in 1990. He undertook two years of postgraduate surgical research, gaining a Master of Surgery degree, and trained in Plastic Surgery in a number of London units, passing the Plastic Surgery Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1998. Following the completion of his surgical training in England, Simon was awarded a travelling fellowship by the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and spent a year in Paris, gaining considerable experience in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and entered onto the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 2001.
Simon has been actively involved in research in the field of plastic surgery, and has presented his findings at international surgical meetings. He has published more than thirty peer reviewed papers and maintains an active interest in surgical research, having recently been awarded a research grant by the Royal College of Surgeons.
Sitting on the academic committee of the European Course for Head and Neck Reconstruction, Simon teaches on the Paris course twice a year; is a tutor on the European Microsurgical course in Milan; and regularly teaches Plastic Surgery trainees at the Royal College of Surgeons. He is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital in London, and his private practice, and his areas of speciality interest include head, neck and breast reconstruction, and all areas of cosmetic aesthetic surgery.
According to Simon Withey:
“I feel honoured and privileged to be leading BAAPS at such an important time. Aesthetic surgery in the UK is the focus of increasing debate about the need for stringent regulation to improve patient safety, surgical training and surgical outcomes. BAAPS is heavily involved in both government and royal college led initiatives to make this happen and I am deeply committed to this process. The need for structured training in aesthetic surgery is paramount and BAAPS is developing regional training programmes and courses for its members.”
Simon has been a long-time member of the BAAPS Council, and has also sat on numerous committees, including the quality and clinical outcomes working group for the Cosmetic Surgery Interspeciality Committee (CSIC), a joint initiative of the Department of Health and the Royal College of Surgeons, which aims to become the basis of regulation in cosmetic surgery in the UK.
