BAAPS Statement on Dissection Course for Beauticians

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (www.baaps.org.uk); the only organisation at the Royal College of Surgeons solely dedicated to the advancement and education of aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery; has expressed concern over a two-day cadaver dissection course for the benefit of beauty therapists held at Newcastle University (NB not "by") in December 2015.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and former President of the BAAPS Fazel Fatah;

"A cadaver dissection course geared towards non-medics beggars belief. How is a beauty therapist qualified to perform invasive treatments that require anatomy training? Non-surgical doesn't mean non-medical!

“This is nothing but an abuse of donated cadavers whose study is meant to promote health and science – not the opposite, by 'training' unqualified people in subjects that could easily lead to endangering a vulnerable public.”

According to consultant plastic surgeon and former President of the BAAPS Rajiv Grover;

"This is not just about teaching how to inject - anyone can wield a needle - it's about those injectors not being equipped to deal with consequences should something go wrong."
